Fragrances : The Hidden Irritants That Could be Messing with Your Mood and Health

I think we can all relate to the experience of bad fragrances. You know. Yo slather on that lotion you just got and think oh yeah this is going to smell so good all day. And then, an hour later it hits you. The most random headache you've experienced in a while. And maybe even some random redness on your skin. What is going on? Why am i having these reactions? Is my lotion not as soothing as I thought? Maybe.

There's one thing to understand about fragrances that might make you think twice about which ones you choose. Fragrances do not need to list their ingredients because it is consider proprietary information. And so you don't really know what's in a fragrance. Or perfume. Crazy right?! This loophole allows companies to use whatever they want in their fragrances without having to tell you. If that's not a scary thought I don't know what is.

The problem with some of the chemicals used is that they become irritants to you and your skin. Some of these fragrances contain alcohol and preservatives that can lead to redness, itchiness, dry patches and can make your skin more sensitive. Even if you've never had issues before, over time you can become sensitive to these ingredients.

Some of these chemicals can cause headaches, make you dizzy and even give you some gnarly mood swings. How? By using synthetic musks and phthalates that are known to cause migraines, brain fog, and anxiety and mood swings. This happens when these compounds stimulate the limbic system in ways it should not be.

Now, here's where things get tricky. Some phthalates are known endocrine disruptors-these compounds mess with your hormones. Studies suggest long-term exposure can lead to imbalanced hormones, fertility issues, and increased stress. And keep in mind, since your skin absorbs what you put on it, you're not just smelling these chemicals- you're soaking them in.

How can we protect ourselves?

I know you've heard us say it before. READ LABELS. Look at every ingredient possible and lean towards fragrance-free products. Maybe stick to essential oils as alternatives but make sure to patch test before full use. And lastly, go minimalist. The fewer ingredients in your skincare, the less chance of irritation, Simple, whole-ingredient formulas are your best friend.

Your skin should make you feel good - not make you sick. Unexplained breakouts, headaches, or mood swings can all be signs to make the switch to all natural.

It's time to let your skin be luxurious.
