Skincare Myths for Men: What You're Getting Wrong

Welcome back to our MANly series. Just came up with that on the spot and it was the first thing that came to mind. It'll get better and that's a promise. lol. I say it's our manly series because I, Itztli, as a male in the skincare self-care industry don't see that many guys talking about much less doing something about their skin. Or their beard, hair, and whatever else you don't take care of. Most of them are forced by their partners into it. You know, the whole nah that's not for men exists.

Our usual interaction with males is they are there with their wife, coming up to our booth, listening to everything we have to say but when it comes time to try some on. "No thanks, I'm good" cus I'm a man damn it. It never fails. Then they make some sort of joke about how they rather eat it than slather it. Come on man I've seen this play before. And I am usually right about the joke too. It makes me laugh inside a little and not because the joke was funny...it's usually not. lol.

We do get to see plenty of wife's thinking about their man's dry and ashy ass elbows, knees and peeling hands. We've heard it all. And all the wives can think of is getting their man some of our magic lotion bars and being their skin back to life. At least one person is thinking about it and actively trying to remedy the situation.

In our last blog I talked about how sometimes it may make you feel unmanly. But today I want to talk about some myths that most of the guys I've interacted with probably believe. Shit I used to. What skincare myths for men you may ask well here's some of the most common ones;

Men's skin is supposed to be rough and tough.

Wrong! It's not the Wild Wild West anymore. You are allowed to take care of your skin and even if you work with your hands a little care goes a long way. Women don't find neglected skin a sign of a manly man. Besides the appearance aspect your skin should be taken care of to avoid long-term damage. Times are changing and so should you.

Sunscreen is for summer days on the beach.

Wrong again bro! Sunscreen is for everyday use. Even when you don't see the sun shinning through. Or are you only exposed to the sun when you go to the beach and not when you walk around the farmer's market? Or what about that outdoor basketball game? Or walking around the golf course for a round of 18. Not expecting to be under the sun? Bro, I've got news for you...

I've got oily skin anyway I'm good on skincare.

Wrong. Do you know why it seems like there's more oil than usual? It's because when dehydrated your face and skin will produce more oil to compensate. Meaning if your face gets glossier by the minute you probably need to moisturize. At least wash your face. Glazed donut is not the look. That was last season. lol.

My beard takes care of my face anyway.

Wrong again man! Take care of that beard hair. Don't be the dry flaky beard guy. Now you're going to be walking around with a dry beard and dry skin under that beard. A double whammy. All I think is about how gross hair can smell if you don't take care of it.

Skincare is not a complicated endeavor. And it's not just for women bro. A little effort goes a long way. So go ahead and start that simple 3 step skincare routine. Or at least start by washing your face with something other than soap. Baby steps.
